You’ve found your person, the one you can’t wait to walk through life with. The dress is ready, the venue is booked, and the countdown to “I do” is officially on. But before the music starts and you say your vows, there’s one last detail to take care of, the marriage license.
It might not be the most glamorous part of wedding planning, but it’s one of the most meaningful. Here’s a little guide to make this process as smooth as possible.
Step 1: Time it Right
In Pennsylvania, marriage licenses are valid for 60 days, but there is a short waiting period before it becomes official. We recommend applying 3-4 weeks ahead of your wedding day and you’ll be one step closer to the aisle
Step 2: Choose your Courthouse
No matter the location, you can apply for your license at any county courthouse, the rules for this being you must apply for a marriage license in the state where the ceremony is to take place. For example , if you live in Philadelphia, you could apply anywhere in the state of PA. Each state has its own set of rules so be sure to check that state’s official government website well in advance.
Step 3: Bring the Essentials
When you apply, both parties need to be present and must bring:
A valid photo ID
Your Social Security Number
A Form of Payment
For those previously married, a divorce decree or a death certificate
The best part is doing this together, another little moment that leads you closer together, maybe a scrapbook moment!
Step 4: The Waiting Period
In PA, once you apply there is a three-day waiting period before the license is valid. This is the time to relax, you do not have to do anything during this time, except maybe start your vows..
Step 5: Say “ I Do”
After your ceremony, your officiant will sign the license and return it to the courthouses. In just a few weeks you should receive your official marriage certificate in the mail.
You’re officially married! Make sure to keep your certified copy in a safe place as you’ll need it for a multitude of other things.
