Wedding Toast and Speech Tips: How to Make Your Words Unforgettable

10 Tips for Giving the Perfect Wedding Toast (Without the Awkward Moments)

Giving a wedding toast is an honor, but it can also be one of the most nerve-wracking parts of the day. Whether you're the best man, maid of honor, parent of the couple, or another special guest, you want your speech to be heartfelt, memorable, and appropriate for everyone in the room.

As a Pittsburgh wedding planner, I've witnessed hundreds of wedding speeches. I've seen guests laugh, cry, and occasionally cringe. If you're wondering how to give a great wedding toast, these simple tips will help you deliver a speech the couple will always remember for the right reasons.

1. Don't Read Your Speech from Your Phone

It may seem convenient, but reading your wedding speech from your phone rarely looks good in photos or video. Instead, write your notes on an index card, small notebook, or even a beautiful vow book. It creates a more polished appearance and eliminates distractions like notifications or your screen locking in the middle of your toast.

2. Keep Your Wedding Speech Short and Sweet

One of the biggest mistakes people make is talking too long. The best wedding speeches typically last 2 to 3 minutes. Practice your speech beforehand and time yourself. You'll keep everyone's attention while still sharing something meaningful.

3. Skip the Inside Jokes

While an inside joke may be hilarious to you and the couple, it often leaves everyone else feeling left out. Instead, choose a story that reflects the couple's personalities, relationship, or love story in a way that every guest can enjoy.

4. Keep It Classy

Remember that grandparents, children, coworkers, and extended family members are all listening. Avoid embarrassing stories, crude humor, references to exes, or anything overly personal. A thoughtful, family-friendly toast will always be appreciated.

5. Time Matters

As a wedding planner, I recommend scheduling speeches before dinner whenever possible. This allows everyone to enjoy the moment while keeping the evening on schedule. It also helps prevent speeches from interfering with important moments like golden hour portraits, cake cutting, or dancing.

6. Tell a Story About the Couple

The most memorable wedding toasts tell a story. Share a moment that highlights the couple's relationship, their personalities, or why they're perfect for one another. Personal stories create emotional connections and make your speech feel authentic.

7. Introduce Yourself Naturally

Don't assume everyone knows who you are. Simply introduce yourself and explain your relationship to the couple. Instead of saying, "For those of you who don't know me," try something more natural like:

"I'm Kristen, and I've had the privilege of being Sarah's best friend for over fifteen years."

It immediately gives guests context without sounding rehearsed.

8. End with Well Wishes

Every great wedding toast should conclude with warm wishes for the couple's future together. Whether it's a heartfelt blessing, words of encouragement, or a simple "Cheers to a lifetime of happiness," ending on a positive note creates a memorable finish.

9. Respect the Couple's Wishes

Before writing your speech, ask the couple if there are any topics they'd prefer to avoid. Family dynamics, former relationships, or private stories may be off limits. Respecting their wishes ensures your toast celebrates them in the way they want to be celebrated.

10. Go Easy on the Drinks

A little liquid courage may seem helpful, but too much alcohol can quickly turn a meaningful toast into an uncomfortable memory. Stay composed so your words come across clearly and sincerely.

What NOT to Include in a Wedding Toast

When preparing your wedding speech, avoid these common mistakes:

  • Making the speech about yourself instead of the couple.

  • Reading directly from your phone.

  • Talking about former relationships, breakups, or affairs.

  • Sharing embarrassing or inappropriate stories.

  • Using inside jokes that only a few people understand.

  • Speaking for too long.

Final Thoughts

A heartfelt wedding toast doesn't have to be complicated. The best speeches are sincere, concise, and focused on celebrating the couple. By preparing ahead of time, telling a meaningful story, and keeping your remarks appropriate for every guest, you'll create a moment the newlyweds will treasure forever.

At Kristen Kane Events, we help couples create seamless wedding days where every special moment, including the speeches, flows naturally.
